Day 2 - the Supermercado

Ola friends!  Happy Sunday Funday to all.  Had some mini adventures today that included a trip to the rooftop gym, a walking tour to find the Google office, and some shopping at the supermercado.

Woke up this morning from the heaviest sleep ever to the sound of my alarm.  It felt like the middle of the night, but it was 9am, so I forced myself out of bed and downstairs for the free buffet breakfast.  This buffet was enormous and had everything you could imagine....coffee, fresh fruit, cold cuts, breads, and a number of things I've never seen before.  Not too shabby for a free daily breakfast.

After scarfing down some fruit and coffee, I headed upstairs to the gym, which was located on the top floor.  It was pretty amazing up there, with all the cardio machines facing toward the panoramic window that had full views of the city.  Gives me a nice reason to work out as much as I can here (especially with all the FOOD).  I listened to my Portuguese 'survival phrases' lessons on my iPod while I rocked some cardio.

My work colleague, Zach, emailed me a detailed map of the area, pointing out all of his favorite places from when he spent 3 months here.  I decided to take a trip to the Extra Supermercado, which is basically like the biggest Target you've ever seen.  Full grocery store plus all of the aisles you see in a Target or Walmart.  I picked up some snacks, some wine (of course), bottled water, and a bunch of other stuff.  When I got to the checkout stand, I used my best "voce fala ingles?" that I learned (do you speak English?).  Of course the answer was no, so the checker and I did our best to determine 'debit or credit?  paper or plastic?'.  Once we got through that piece, I realized that my eyes were obviously bigger than my arms because I had about 8+ bags worth of stuff and a 6 pack of big water bottles.  The walk there was a breeze, but the walk back, I got the most intense arm workout of my life.  2 or 3 taxis stopped to ask if I needed a ride, but my hotel was within sight so I kept saying 'nao obrigada' (no thanks).  As I'm typing this, my arms are still shaking....an hour later.

At least now my hotel room is a little more like home!  Let's hope that wine gets chilled ASAP.....

I'll report back tomorrow after I've spent a day in the Google office.

Tchau!
