In four short days, I'll be hopping on a plane, headed East and then very much south, to Sao Paulo. Leading up to this trip, I've learned a few interesting things:
-Getting a visa is no easy task - and the Brazilian Consulate is a bit like the DMV. Take a number and hope for the best! (I got very lucky!). Can't get a visa without a booked trip, can't go on the trip without a visa, and no indication of processing time. Chicken, egg, chicken, egg. I made a guess and got it right.
-I thought Portuguese was a close sibling to Spanish....it's more like a distant cousin that you don't see all that often. Obrigado!
-Paying for Economy+ on United will be worth every penny on this long journey, with these long limbs. I'm going to do everything in my power to upgrade even more. The high heels may come out for this one.
-A whole bunch of people are coming out of the woodwork, who HAVE made this trip and 100% of them say it will be a blast.
-The #1 tourist activity for Sao Paulo, according to TripAdvisor, is a service called 'RentALocalFriend.com'. Sounds a little random and slightly sad, based on the title....but after reading a bunch of solid reviews, here's how it works: you are paired up with a local who will show you around town and give you the insider tips. I'll be meeting with my newly rented local friend, Nathalia, on 8/13. She already has plans for us to hit up the farmers markets, historical spots, some bars, and local live music venues.
The trip's taking shape and the excitement's growing by the minute......stay tuned for more updates from the road!
